Hi everyone, thanks for joining. Please welcome Farley Chatto (@farleychatto), fashion designer and Ryerson graduate. How are you doing today?
Hi Everyone, great day and busy day!
How's the preparation for WMCFW going? What inspired your upcoming collection?
Prep for #WMCFW is CRAZY. Here with @StaceyMcKenzie1 & she's eating my fries! Finishing up the casting & soon to figure out fitting times.
The inspiration for the collection is our Canadian fur tradition- made new! The collection is called "Far & Away"- experiences one has in their life journey, and then interpreted into our history. Respecting Nature's abundance and treasures- its amazing
for me Inspiration is everywhere. I always say I am like sponge, and once I see it, read it, taste it, It gets stored in head and pop up when i might need it! from friends, art, travel, even junk left on the sidewalk, it is always a source of ideas
Toronto is my home, and it always is inspiring. I find it's a great ground city to foster talents, and it always influenced me mixed in with my travels - it;s eclectic like the city!
funny thing about trends- i tend to look a them AFTER i finish my collection. I follow my gut & instincts, and 99% of the time it's right! And as a designer, we should be the ones to set the Trends, not follow them.
INTERN, INTERN, INTERN and then network, network, network, and lastly Volunteer, volunteer & volunteer some more
inorder to get a job you need the experience. There are very few companies that will take someone fresh without some experience. The more you can say you have done, and learn on the job while interning will always end up in a job closer to what you want!
even before MASS EX- I was already showing prior to that. I started my collection at the end of 2nd year, and by 3rd year I was showcasing my fall line (2nd collection) I had already been active in the industry as a new designer & volunteering a lot!
you are the maker of the opportunities- they don't come to you, YOU need to be active and go out and look for them, and work for them. #work #lovewhatyoudo
A fashion student asks: If you were to do anything differently what would it be?
hummm very good question- Honestly, I think the only difference would be more business minded. I'm honest- I am the worst business person out there!! If I had more biz acumen, I think i'd be more stable. Yet I do like the flux and chaos...
#1 project is sleep!! then @Daretowearlove is my next big show- fundraiser for Stephen lewis foundation. I am lucky to be dressing the developer king- #BradLamb. So no rest for the fashionably wicked!
Lastly, what do you hope to see in the future of the fashion industry?
that we have an industry left!! It's changed so much since the 80's. I urge CDN designs to challenge themselves, to keep canadian fashion alive and don't forget to about FUR!!! :-)
Thanks everyone for tuning in and a huge thank you to Farley Chatto for joining us this afternoon!
Thanks everyone for the convo! It was a blast! See you at the tents! #furtastic!
