#Fact: Ron Levi was awarded the Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize in 2014.
"Building authority in a contentious community and resonating it back home," says Levi on prosecutors.
"Prosecutors brought in 'compliance partner' alliances with media, states, geopolitical parties and financial powers," says Levi.
Looking to build authorities by "narrowing space between fields" amongst prosecutors through networking. "You're trying to align prosecution field and partners," he says.
Levi speaks about the integration of forensic experts in prosecutions, like DNA analyses and laboratories.
Levi speaks about the alliance of prosecutors and journalists. "You need to align the media to get budget bureaucrats." By aligning the fields, prosecutors needed coverage from the media for their trials...etc. Including American trials in foreign countries.
"Though news organizations (like Slate magazine's coverage of Assad and the criminal court) may talk about the court, but it does not mean they have influence and impact authority," says Levi.
How do prosecutors discuss criminal law at home? Levi says that prosecutors try to justify trials through representation and appealing to victims, domestic, market grounds and opinion.
Prosecutors hedge justifications, but in the international criminal court this decreases.
Levi asks audience how to measure success and failure both externally and internally within prosecutions of ICC and international law.
How to prosecute cases when the victims have passed away in regards to mass violence? Levi says it's the aesthetics, like using helicopters capturing mass bodies- birds-eye-view.
Audience member asks if is there any hope in ways of prosecuting international leaders in African countries through ICC. Levi says that some states agreed to join ICC, and that more cases should be brought to international courts rather than the theory to bring atrocities to light and to have in country prosecutions rather than international.
Audience member asks: "How does the media change prosecutions?"
Levi says we see the media's interest like in the Yugoslavia case. Media plays the role to attract the audience, but you have to attract the media. Levi says it's important how to narrow the space between the media as an alliance and pitch them a case.
Audience member #3 asks how judges in the ICC are selected.
Levi says that it's through their ties with international community and age/experience.
