Campus police are already in the lobby of the Ramsay Wright Laboratories. These are regular peace officers but they don't carry sidearms. Fun fact: apparently they are the second oldest police force in Ontario.
My apologies about the sideways video...mistake will be rectified.
Someone in the protest groups says they should make noise in hallway to be heard inside.
Protestors can be heard inside the lecture hall ... But it's not too loud.
As long as they stay in the hallway chanting, protestors can stay... University official.
Protestors have now started banging on a door in an adjacent room.
The event is underway. The crowd is overwhelmingly male. Approximately 75 people in attendance.
Dr. Katherine Young speaking now, says she has to get used to speaking over the noise (outside).
Dr. Paul Nathanson making his introduction.
Dr. Nathanson: "My message to them is...I'm going to say what I want." ...to applause
Protestors behaviour is very distracting inside the lecture hall, especially the pounding.
Dr. Nathanson talking about growing up, bullies in school, being gay.
Fire alarm has been pulled.
Protestors have been moved outside.
My apologies for not having more event coverage...I've been outside a lot of the time. Now I'm in the lecture hall listening to Dr. Nathanson.
Dr. Young saying that patriarchy is essential concept to feminism..used by feminists to explain everything bad that's happened.
Now talking about her? book -some problems today are a result of feminists blaming men for everything wrong that happens. Feminist understanding of patriarchy is used to blame men for everything wrong that's happened - Dr. Young
Misogyny and Misandry two sides of the same coin according to speaker.
I will see if I can find a link to a full recording of the lectures later.
Nathanson, male complacency to misandry is declining.
Young: in area of men's health issues - a lot of undiagnosed men's health issues because it's not "masculine" to look into them. Men have been encultured into stoicism.
I have more videos, clips from lectures, will upload later.
Purpose of having men's centre is not to march in the streets for "men's rights" but to talk about what it means to be a man. - Nathanson
Also to educate people in this discussion. - Young
Men cannot allow women to define them. Because women have chosen to define themselves men must do the same. - Nathanson
The idea that women are superior to men is a departure from egalitarianism feminism.
Dualism - us verses them - a feature of modern idealogical feminism. - Dr. Young.
Inter-sexual dialogue is like stereophonic sound - you get two voices which should give depth with etiquette and good will. - Dr. Young
University is important to issue because it has a history of being a place where complex issues can be explored. If the university loses that then where is the forum for this kind of dialogue. - Dr. Young
The ability of men to make valuable contributions to society is becoming more and more limited. Only one thing that men can do that is still distinctive: fatherhood.
In order to have an identity one must be able to contribute to society in some meaningful way.
- Dr. Nathanson
Now moving into open mic period. It will be interesting to see what happens.
It looks as if someone intentionally just turned off the lights in the room and left.
The meeting is now winding down. I'm not sure if there's still going to be a Q. and A. or whether there were no questions.
When asked by moderator what they have to say about people trying to associate men's issues advocates with right-wing politics, Dr. Nathanson responds by saying "I'm gay, how conservative can I be," to laughter in the room.
Justice involves reconciliation, not festering resentment," Dr. Nathanson. Now moving to Q and
