Still waiting to start. More and more people are filing in. You can still make it if you want, the event is in SSC 115.
RSU President Rajean Hoilett says we are about the get started. The event was supposed to start at 5:30.
Hoilett starts off by telling the crowd what the RSU has accomplished so far. He says highlights include women's only gym time, the parade and picnic on Toronto Island and the Activist Assembly.
There is a harassment officer here to keep things from getting out of control.
Despite being a public event, members of the media are told not to film or photograph people who request to not be on camera.
The room overwhelmingly votes to reduce speaking time to three minutes from 10. Also, now only three people need to vote against a motion for it to be amended.
A man at the mic is asking for RSU operations, the "No Islamophobia. No Antisemitism. No Racism campaign," and the No Anti-Semitism on Campus campaign to be moved to the top of meeting. These seem to be the most important issues in the agenda.
"RSU operations" relates to opting out of RSU membership.
It passed, when the room gets to new business students will vote on those issues first. Extending women's only gym time has also been bumped up the order.
So if you have the agenda handy the order is now motions H, I, J, C, A, B, D, E, F, G.
RSU financial audited statements have been approved. Just taking care of housekeeping at this point.
Did you know that if there is a tie in an RSU election, the winner is decided by a coin toss? There's a motion to change that.
The chair takes exception to VP of Education Jesse Root calling claims that election dates favour the incumbent party "absurd." Reminds him to be respectable.
The bylaw amendments have been approved.
Opting out of RSU violates RSU by-laws. Chair says it is in order, but likely won't go anywhere.
Student says we need to take care of local issues before RSU engages in foreign issues.
Amad wonders why we are talking about the budget being available when tuition fees are so expensive.
Students vote in favour of budgets and expenses to be accessible online.
Motion for RSU to stop funding campaigns centered around foreign policies. One student said we don't vote for a political party (RSU). The motion does not pass though.
Motion to revamp and revive No Islamophobia, No Anti-Semitism, No Racism Campaign has passed.
Next motion is "No Anti Semitism on Campus."
The room is arguing over the definition of "anti-Semitism," and whether the motion satisfies that. The room seems pretty calm though.
Motion J passed. RSU will publish an annual report detailing all incidents of racism including antisemitism.
A large chunk of the room just left after that.
Recess for 30 mins now. People are filing out.
Whoops, before the recess motion K went to vote. So the women's only gym program will be expanded and continue.
The event was supposed to end at 8:30. We do not have quorum. There aren't enough people here right now.
If the meeting adjourns, the motions will go to the next RSU board of directors meeting.
The remaining motions I should say. The remaining motions include banning 8 a.m. classes and pop quizzes, and making Ryerson a smoke-free campus.
Students voted on another five minute recess to see if quorum could be achieved. The meeting needs 100 voters to continue.
Looks like the meeting will continue as more people showed up.
Freeze the fees is on the table now.
One speaker is speaking against the Freeze the Fees campaign. The crux of his argument is it will never happen so why bother. That's a hot take.
VP of Education Jesse Root, who introduced the motion, is shaking his head in disagreement.
Root is giving a passionate speech now stating his case. He says to direct your anger at the appropriate people.
The motion in support of Freeze the Keys passed.
Next motion: banning pop quizzes on the grounds that they are unfair.
A student is speaking against the motion saying that students should always be on top of material, and banning pop quizzes would encourage students to cram.
Someone asks if it is in the RSU's power to ban pop quizzes. It is not but now they can lobby for it to get done.
Next motion is banning 8 a.m. classes.
Motion carries. That was fast.
Next motion is making Ryerson a smoke-free campus. But...we have lost quorum.
Someone went out to get the person back in here. Some people came in but the chair is going to count just to make sure.
Only 87. Motion for recess for 5 minutes to try and nab 13 people.
Meeting is adjourned. Goodnight!
